Lincoln Bicentennial at Chicago History MuseumAbraham Lincoln's Legacy & Artifacts in Year Long Celebration
The Chicago History Museum will celebrate the Abraham Lincoln Bicentennial during a year long event ,sponsored by Exelon, starting on February 12, 2009.
The Chicago History Museum will celebrate the Abraham Lincoln Bicentennial of his birthday The year long celebration of the life of the 16th President of the United States highlights his historic contributions to American. The Bicentennial event begins on his birthday, February 12, 2009 and will conclude on President’s Day, February 15, 2010. Throughout the celebratory year, programs and exhibitions will engage visitors to explore the qualities that make Lincoln familiar and meaningful for Americans today. Programs will include holiday celebrations, lectures and tours. Lincoln TreasuresThe Museum will kick off the bicentennial celebration on February 12 with a day of Lincoln inspired activities and the opening of the exhibition, Lincoln Treasures. The Chicago History Museum has one of the foremost Abraham Lincoln collections in the United States. Lincoln Treasures will highlight key artifacts and documents for the collection. Lincoln Treasures is a collection that will excite memoires about the man and his legacy. This exhibition will run from February 12 through August 16, 2009. Abraham Lincoln TransformedThe second Abraham Lincoln exhibition, Abraham Lincoln Transformed, will open on October 10, 2009. The exhibition will explore the 16th president’s changing views on slavery and the Union. Four million African American slaves were freed by the Union, transforming thee nation. Abraham Lincoln Transformed will address Lincoln’s posthumous role as an American icon. Over two hundred artifacts from the Museum collection will be showcased during this exhibition, which wil closed on April 4, 2010. Benito Juarez and the Making of Modern MexicoIn addition to a new, broader perspective on Lincoln, the Museum will examine one of his contemporaries, Benito Juarez. The exhibition, Benito Juarez and the Making of Modern Mexico, is co-curated with the National Museum of Mexican Art and will be displayed from October 10, 2009 through April 4, 2010. Juarez was the first civilian president of Mexico from 1858-72. He was devoted to making Mexico a modern Republic with just laws, equal citizenship rights and economic development. Lincoln and Juarez had man similarities. Both leaders dealt with nation crises, sparked controversy during their lifetimes and became larger-than-life national heroes after death. The Juarez exhibition will be on display from October 10, 2009 through April 4, 2010. Exhibition Sponsored by ExelonChicago based Exelon is the presenting sponsor of the Lincoln Bicentennial celebration. Programming will be enhanced through partnerships with the Chicago Bar Association, Seventh Circuit Bar Association, Chicago Public Library, The Abraham Lincoln Bicentennial Commission and the National museum of Mexican Art.
